A 20-Something’s Guide to Organizing Your Thoughts

Let's make life a little bit easier and a lot less stressful.

Life in your twenties can be messy - there's studying, working, friendships, relationships, social media, oh and trying to figure out your future - no big deal, right? It's only natural to feel overwhelmed when your mind is packed with endless things to do. That's why mental decluttering is so important! It can be a total game-changer for making life feel more manageable. Here's how you can get started.

Step 1: Recognize Your Mental Overload

Ever felt like your head is one giant, disorganized Pinterest board? Full of ideas, plans and random "what ifs", but for some reason you can't make any of it happen? Trust me, you're not alone. The first step toward a clearer mind is simply noticing when it’s cluttered. By tuning in and admitting you’re mentally overloaded, you lay the groundwork for real change.

Step 2: Brain Dump Everything

Sometimes the best way to tackle chaos is to get it all out in front of you. That's where brain dumping comes in.

  1. Grab a notebook or open a blank document. Write down anything and everything that's on your mind - upcoming deadlines, random ideas, worries, errands, even show recommendations from friends.

  2. Once everything is on paper (or screen), scan through your list and highlight the tasks that need immediate attention. This helps sort out the urgent from the "maybe someday".

  3. Let go of what's not relevant. If you come across thoughts or tasks that no longer matter, give yourself permission to let them go. Holding onto unnecessary things can keep you stuck in a mental clutter.

A brain dump is a no-judgment zone. No one else has to see it, so don’t worry about grammar, your handwriting, or how silly a thought may seem. This is your safe space to get out all that mental baggage.

Step 3: Organize and Prioritize

Now that you have a giant list of things to do, it's time to organize! Group tasks by category - like school, work, personal errands, and fun stuff. Within each category, pick out the top two or three items that need your immediate attention. This way, you're not drowning in an endless to-do list and know where to start.

Step 4: Manage your Digital Space

Let's face it: your phone and social apps are part of everyday life, but they can also be a major source of mental clutter. Turn of notifications for non-urgent apps to keep your digital life from taking over. Spending less time scrolling through endless feeds can give you a mental break and help you focus on tasks or hobbies that genuinely add value to your life. I know, I know... way easier said than done.

Step 5: Practice Mindfulness Every Day

Sometimes, your mind needs an actual “time-out” to step away from the chaos. That’s where a quick mindfulness practice can make a difference. Take just one minute—seriously, just 60 seconds—to breathe in slowly, feel the air moving through your body, and notice what’s around you. Pay attention to the subtle sounds in the background or the weight of your body in your chair. This tiny pause serves as a refresh button, grounding you in the present so you’re not constantly stuck in overthinking mode. Think of it as a micro-break for your brain, no complicated techniques or meditation apps required. If this is not enough for you, take mindful walks without your phone and notice the sounds, colors and smells around you.

Over time, these small moments of calm add up to a more balanced and focused mindset.

Step 6: Be Kind to Yourself in the Process

Celebrate the small wins! Did you make progress on your school project or finally send that important email? Give yourself a mental high-five! Recognizing even the smallest accomplishments keeps you motivated and reminds you that you're moving forward.

It's okay that you still feel overwhelmed sometimes. None of us have it all figured out - especially in our twenties. Treat yourself with the same kindness you'd offer to a friend.

You Can Do This

Decluttering your mind is all about creating space to breathe, focus, and enjoy the ride (yes, even when life feels crazy). By brain dumping your thoughts, sorting out priorities, cutting back on digital distractions, and being mindful, you’ll start seeing real change in how you handle everyday stress. Remember, you’re not alone on this journey—treat yourself with kindness, and keep taking small steps toward a calmer, clearer mindset.

You've got this. Always.
